Westminster Under School, Independent Preparatory School

Independent Preparatory School

7 — 13

27 Vincent Square, SW1P 2NN

Westminster Under School is an independent preparatory school for boys, aged 7-13, in the centre of London. The school has a rich history, dating back to 1943 when it was founded in Little Dean’s Yard, just behind Westminster Abbey. Since 1981 the school has been situated on Vincent Square, overlooking the Westminster School playing fields. The boys enjoy their time at school and are encouraged to think for themselves, to engage fully in class discussions and to take pride in their work.

Entry to the school is by examination at Year 3, 4 and 7. Academic standards are high, but standards in the classroom and good sport, music, art and drama are by no means mutually exclusive, and staff value the pupils’ achievements in all areas of school life.

With around 275 pupils, staff are able to build strong relationships with the boys. Whilst we encourage academic excellence, we aim to produce well-rounded young men who are respectful of each other and aware of their responsibilities in an increasingly challenging world.

Parents who wish to register their sons for entry in Year Three (7+), Year Four (8+) or Year Seven (11+) should complete a registration form. The School would prefer registration forms to be received approximately two years before the proposed date of entry, but the latest that registration forms can be accepted is the October half-term preceding the proposed date of entry.

Registered candidates and their parents will be invited to one of the Open Mornings held during the autumn term when they will have an opportunity to look around the school, speak to boys and staff and put to the Master any questions they might have. Entrance examinations for all age groups are held in January each year. Although the entrance examinations are designed to test potential, the School expect the candidates to be achieving good standards at their current schools.

Term Fees 2012-2013:

The fees for 2012 – 2013 at the Under School are £5,038 per term, inclusive of school lunches.

A number of means-tested bursaries up to 100% of the fees are available at 11+ entry. Boys who are awarded bursaries at 11+ spend two years at our Under School and then move automatically into Westminster School at the start of Year 9.

Additionally, the School offers music scholarships to talented musicians entering the School at the 11+ entry point and these are also available to pupils already at the school. The School also has an outstanding record of boys winning music awards at 13+ to Westminster, St Paul’s and Eton.
