Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde, 24 October 2014 – 11 February 2015

Overview
Vasudeo S. Gaitonde was considered one of India’s most talented abstract painters. In this exhibition held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the works of Gaitonde will be celebrated to the extent they deserve.
The Guggenheim Museum is holding the first exhibition dedicated to the renowned Indian modern painter, Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde. Gaitonde’s art gives visitors the opportunity to explore Indian modern art as it was presented in the metropolitan centres of Mumbai and New Dehli from the late 1940s to the end of the 20th century.
Gaitonde was known to many as an artistic genius, a man of uncompromising artistic integrity of spirit and purpose. His work has been acknowledged by fellow artists, intellectuals, and studied by later generations of students and collectors. This exhibition will present 30 of his major paintings, as well as 20 works on paper brought in from leading galleries and private collections from all over the globe.
Gaitonde explored non-objective art in the 1960s through the use of palette knives, paint rollers and experimented with torn pieces of newspaper to intensify his recognised abstract style. It is evident that unique art such as this that oozes authentic creativity can not be seen anywhere else.
