Marmara Island, A Land of Marble

Marmara is the largest island in the Sea of Marmara, a mountainous region dotted with dramatic windswept hills and beautiful pine forests. Marmara has been inhabited since ancient times, and during the Roman era it was known for the quality of its marble. This history is preserved today in the harbour of Saraylar, an ancient marble loading dock which is operational as an anchorage for yachts to this day.

Also, there is a Marble Museum which stands in one of the island’s many quarries and displays a series of intriguing unfinished Roman sculptures. Marmara also has a number of popular beaches offering watersports and kayak tours.
