Gemiler Island, A Religious Experience

Gemiler is a tiny, uninhabited Mediterranean island which primarily attracts travellers due to the extensive ruins of a Byzantine religious settlement which once stood there. The island features the remains of four churches, houses, several ceremonial tombs and a medieval harbour, making it one of the most complete Byzantine ruins still standing and a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these ancient people.

Gemiler is also believed to be the final burial place of St. Nicholas, and this legend has attracted pilgrims from all across the Christian world since the Middle Ages. Aside from its historical significance, Gemiler’s quiet bay is also a perfect place to take in the gorgeous Mediterranean scenery from your yacht.
