For Sale, Six Bedroom House, Cornwall Terrace, Regent’s Park, London NW1

Description

Lethbridge house is named after Sir Roper Lethbridge who was an academic, a civil servant in India and an important Conservative politician representing Kensington North constituency.

He lived in 20 Cornwall Terrace from 1898 – 1902. Educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and the Inner Temple, he enjoyed a steady rise through the ranks of the Indian Civil Service, receiving a knighthood in 1885. A widower, he married Emma Neave (who became Lady Lethbridge) in 1902.

Lady Lethbridge provided the words of a number of traditional children’s poems to the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould, a celebrated Victorian biographer of saints, antiquarian, novelist, song-collector and hymn-writer. Her verses were included in Baring-Gould’s English Folk Songs for Schools, published in 1907 and widely used for the next sixty years.

Thus the poems attributed to Lady Lethbridge (whom we might fairly consider to be the Poet of Cornwall Terrace) have echoed all down the years in schools everywhere; and many must still recall the words and music she brought to the nation.
